Le restaurant était proche du domicile de Sloan, à l'époque au 165, 23ème rue Ouest, en bordure du Tenderloin. La scène date de l'hiver 1909 - "une fille vêtue de façon voyante, avec d'orgueilleuses plumes rouges sur son chapeau, jouant avec le gros chat du restaurant... cela ferait un bon sujet" (1) Trois semaines plus tard il retourne au restaurant pour "se rafraîchir la mémoire" (2) : il s'est mis à son tableau.
