Laurence Stephen Lowry (1887-1976) fils d'un agent immobilier et d'une professeure de piano, lui-même caissier  jusqu'à sa retraite, est le peintre des rues, des usines et du peuple de l'Angleterre industrielle, spécialement de sa ville de Salford près de Manchester. Comme le dit la chanson il croquait les sorties d'usine sur des enveloppes usagées ou des bouts de carton d'emballage. Il était secret et affabulateur, il admirait Rossetti, Van Gogh, Magritte et Lucian Freud en peinture, Donizetti, Bach et Bellini en musique, en littérature Dickens et Thomas Hardy comme tout anglais qui se respecte, mais aussi La Rochefoucauld. La célébrité venant sur la fin, il avait poliment refusé le titre de chevalier et les décorations qu'on lui proposait. Et chacune des horloges qu'il collectionnait était réglée à une heure différente. Une partie de son œuvre, érotique (les Portraits d'Ann) n'a été découverte qu'après sa mort.

Quelles que soient aujourd'hui ses cotes - élevées - c'est souvent le terme de provincialisme qui revient quand on commente Lowry. Pourtant, ses bonshommes en allumettes trottent dans l'universelle fatalité aussi bien que ceux de Beckett et de Giacometti, leurs stricts contemporains.

Aussi abstraits soient-ils, ces schématiques citoyens de la grisaille, ils restent tout aussi cramponnés à leur Lancashire que les villageois de Stanley Spencer à leur Cookham natal. Et c'est bien là le mystère. Peut-être vient-il de ce que c'est dans leur petite province - un temps le cœur industriel de la planète - que l'on a inventé le capitalisme moderne, notre village global en voie de lent effondrement ?

Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs, composé en hommage à Lowry, a été le seul succès de Brian & Michael (Michael Coleman et Kevin Parrott) - mais un succès phénoménal, n°1 des Single Charts au Royaume-Uni trois semaines durant en avril 1978. En fond à la fin du morceau, les enfants du St Winifred's Choir (les St-Winnies Girls) entonnent The Big Ship Sails on the Alley-Alley-O.

Et, dix ans avant Brian & Michael, les Matchstick Men, les hommes en bâtons d'allumettes de Lowry, avaient déjà inspiré le premier single de :
